Nicholas Dattner style finish
Hi
I recently saw an amazing Nicholas Dattner showroom in Sydney. Does anyone how to achieve the same finish they have achieved? To my eye I thought it was a french polish - but the salesman assured me it could handle spilt red wine etc.
Any thoughts would be great.

Pre-cat or nitrocelulose lacquer and professional finishers they also use to use Danish oil, polyurethane, wax and others.
At least that's what they used to use. I have been to their showroom and factory a few times but not for a year or so.
If you were impressed with their finish you would be over the moon at a propper french polish. Some of the finishes I have seen in the past were pretty unimpressive. Maybe they have a new method or or are using a 2 part epoxy or something similar.
Cheers - Neil.
PS We have a HARD SHELLAC which when used as French Polish will stand up to spilt red wine, water and heat.

In reply to Dattner's finish,
I recently went there and was told that it was "incredibly hard wearing" and that they don't use polyurethane since it cracks and stains if in contact with alcohol. The saleswoman said they use a "special home formulated oil".
I reckon that's a load of spaghetti, as I have had equal if not better results with Shellawax and also Organoil Hard Burnishing Oil.
I'd say, experiment and make up your own mind.
Wad.
