    Default deck question

    hi all ,
im new here i live on the goldcoast , by trade im a painter im undertaking the job of recoating my mates deck, about a year ago he bought the house and it had been freshly coated , not long after he moved in it started peeling , to me it apears like a brown enamel has been used over a previously stained surface , i scraped a fair bit off today using a tungsten , i can only see two options, one i scrape as much off back to sound surface and repaint , or use some type of stripper to take it back and start a fresh . in my opinion painting over whats there could lead to more headaches down the track . he preferrs the idea of having a stained deck than a painted one also .

i have no idea of what to use to strip it , is there a product specifically for decks ?
its a 50 odd sqm deck any idea of cost ? i was thinking of using sikkens but after reading some threads about spa ndeck im not so sure spandeck sounds like a good product

    id appreciate any feedback cheers

hired a floor sander and took right back to good stuff deck is kwila i decided to go with spandeck , 1 ,2 ,3, put first coat (cedar colour) on while stillwet dryed quite dull , after a few more coats will it go a few shades darker ? im hoping so as my mate seemed a little dissapointed , im thinking i should have gone down the sikkens route for that deep wet look . however it is what it is i suppose ... end of the day it looks a million times better than before

I would have replied earlier but the website was cracking the sads on me. I personally have sikkens on a deck at home. Love the stuff, looks great works better than any other "coating" I know. But in reference to your original question it is a surface coating and will fail if not maintained. Maintenance coat required every 12 - 18 months depending on aspect and amount of cover. Spa n Deck, is a product I've never liked the look of. Somewhere between a decking oil and a surface coating... seems to last alright if you like the look of it.

    Regards

Couldn't have said it better myself spectre. I have also been disappointed in Spa & Deck. It looks very lifeless and I find it does not last as well as it claims Also to the original post. YES.. stain on top of stain makes darker stain.
