Finish on red gum
Hi guys
I have never worked with red gum before so I'm not sure how or what type of finish I should use. It will be a rocking chair and I'm thinking of using Danish oil, but would like some better informed advise please.

HI Superbunny,
DO works well. It gives a nice satin finish. You could also use Tung oil. I've got good results from a mixture of Tung oil and about 15% poly U. The oil soaks right in and the little bit of poly gives a finish between satin and gloss. The finish is still fairly flexible and not rock hard like traditional poly and can still be repaired without having to strip the whole lot back to bare timber. You could substitute the Tung oil with Danish and have your own secret recipe for Scandinavian Oil. Different people and companies add different things for their own formula.
More info here on Scandinavian oil.
