Default Search page problem as Guest

I was just passing by my computer and thought to do a search about an upcoming event. I didn't want to log in, as 'twas just a quick, one-off search while I had a spare few minute and I didn't want to lose my last-read pointers.

Into the search function, enter my query... and received an error response along the lines of "your verification doesn't match the displayed image."

    Well... something like that, anyway.

"Oh yeah," I think to myself, "I forgot about that..."

So, look for the alphanumeric verification box... can't see it. Exit the search page and re-enter... Not there. Exit out of Firefox altogether, reload and back to the search engine... still no verification box!

Something is broken: it's not giving me the image at all, yet it's definitely comparing my (lack of) input against the image and denying access to the search functions.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

The machine has been waiting years to tell you.....and it finally did.

I'll pass it on Skew (seriously)

    Thanks, Watson.

It wouldn't ordinarily worry me - I've only just noticed it myself - but it's a function that's accessible by Guest Users. So it should either work or be made not available to them at all.

Hopefully da boyz in da background will decide to fix it, not remove it...

Can you please post a screeny? I'm pretty sure we use a third party solution for verification's. I'll have a look into it now.

OK here is what I see as a guest:

It was probably caused by a temp problem with the reCAPTCHA people

FWIW, I'm using FireFox v3.0.13 under WinXP Pro SP3.

Can you replicate from another machine? Even though logging out declares all cookies cleared, I suspect it isn't entirely true. When I access without logging in, and hit "Today's Posts," I get the business about "the following threads have not been updated since your last visit." This is several hours later, and there are, in fact, new posts. It could, of course, be related to the 14-hour time offset, and I haven't kept precise records.

You definitely should get the graphic for interpretation. It's a protection against spybots.

    Cheers,
