Adding A Pic To Your Post

Can anyone explain briefly or extensively on how they prepare their pictures; what software they use and the final sizes they aim at. I had a number that i attempted to upload, however, the program must have seized up as I gave up after a few minutes. When I prepare anything for ebay I use Photoshop and convert a batch of images to 400x600 ppi and set resolution at 72 dpi. That way I know that the ebay processor will upload quickly and my images will remain appealing.
In the spirit of the discussion I've uploaded (I think I have) a scan of a book I'm considering selling, however, it didn't work: viz: british forest trees3.jpg: The Dimension limits for this filetype are 800 x 800. We were unable to resize your file so you will need to do so manually and upload it again. Your file is currently 3395 x 2208.
The image is 3.1 mb, which is not large but then again, it is for this system. I then reduced the image to 1.2mb and I got this:

So I went even lower 3"x4.4"x72dpi. Okay, it uploaded, however, on my screen I cannot see any detail. But the outline is there. Is this what you expect and find acceptable?
What's advised by the organisers I wonder?

The image can be no larger than 800px x 600px and must be under 100kb.

I use Photoshop Elements.

I use the cropping tool (set at 72 dpi) to get as close as I can to what I want to show

They I go to:

File --> Save for Web

This opens a large panel for adjusting the picture.
Check the box for "optimized."
Set the Quality for 50%
Set the largest dimension for 600 px and be sure to click "Apply"

This will shrink and compress your jpg wonderfully. If it is still too large, you can play with the quality, looking at the right-hand window to see if you are losing any important detail. You can also play with the dimensions more.

It will save it as a jpg. I always add "web" at the end of the name so I know later that it's already been compressed if I want to use it again.

Let me know if you think I should post screen shots to make this easier to understand.
