Paying for an item on ebay - paypal

Hi guys and gals

was thinking of bidding on a couple items but ebay isn't giving up much information on paying via pay pal. If a seller accepts pay pal can I expect that I can pay with a credit card via the paypal site. Or does the seler have to set that up as a feature. Don't really feel like finding out later that I have to go through the hassle of some other method.

Normally the seller will have their methods of payments that they accept on the listing. If they accept PayPal then yes you pay through the PayPal site, it automatically goes to it when you go to pay for it. I just did a purchase on eBay the other going through PayPal so it was pretty straight forward.

What you do is click on pay via PayPal and it comes up if you don't have a Pay pal account it will give you the option of opening one and then you just register a credit card with PayPal for them to deduct it from. Very safe and you don't have to give your credit card details to every Tom, Dick and Harry.

I generally use paypal for all my purchases on Ebay and the funds come directly from a registered bank account. Had to use my credit card the other day for a purchase and when I checked my card statement the bank had treated it as a cash advance. Not happy seeing as how my card account always has a credit balance!!!

I've bought a number of eBay items recently, all using paypal linked to a credit card.
No problems to date.
Another reason to use paypal is that there is often buyer protection to limit the impact if ripped of by an eBay seller.

I've had problems with paypal trying to make unauthorized withdrawls in the past and have no intensions of opening an account with them again. If I don't have an account can I still buy something through paypal using a credit card. Why I ask is I don't want to bid and win only to find out the seller has a paypal account but they don't allow purchases to be paid by credit card (as I think they loose a few % in the transaction and there's a fee for the service).

It sounds like you all are saying though I need to open an account even as a purchaser.

I think that's the way it is with Paypal.
I've never had a problem with it .

The other option is by direct debit , if you have access to online banking ,you just need to get the sellers BSB Number and bank account details.
It is another safe way of paying , as your bank will issue a receipt number online .
Just note it down and if there are any problems ,notify your bank and they will track the payment ,and recover the funds.
Paypal is less hassle ,but I use both methods as some sellers don't like Paypal because of the fees.
Paypal is owned by Ebay some they get the sellers fees plus the transaction fee.
I always look before I bid ,some want cheques posted ,too much hassle for me .

With PayPal it is almost immediate so the seller has your money much quicker and can post the item sooner. Once you have your account set up and verified it is also the best way if purchasing from overseas as well.

Don't know which bank you bank with, but the bank I use (CBA) has the money in the payee's account overnight if the transaction is done before 6pm EST. Except on Friday, then it doesn't get there till Tuesday, as the next processing run is on Monday.

I agree that PayPal is very quick and ideal for the BUYER, the SELLER pay quite hefty fees though, as my son found to his cost when he sold a car on Ebay and forgot to swicth PayPal off as a payment option

What do you mean unauthorised withdrawals? They usually have a reason.

I have used PayPal for years for $1000's worth of transactions (both as a buyer and seller) and never had a problem. It is the quickest and simplest method for making transactions across the globe.

Years ago, back in the days when you could actually talk to them over the phone, I had set up a sellers account and stipulated that I would pay all fees with a credit card. They were not to attempt to withdraw money from the account for any reason. It was one of their rules that you had to have a bank account set up even if I never intended to use it to pay fees. They said that was no problem. Months later I get a letter from the bank saying I have $100 in charges for with drawl attempts when there was insufficient funds - all because of paypal. I contact paypal and they say they're sorry but have no intensions of reimbursing me. And the bank doesn't care they demand I pay them. I told paypal to jamb their account. Funny how they then tried to contact me to see if there was anything they could do to change my mind - I told them to bugger off. At that time there was an increasing number of sellers on ebay refusing to use paypal also - maybe they have things figured out now but I'm done with them. I'm not one to give out second chances to businesses all that often.

We are getting rid of some stuff at the moment through EBay. The winner of an item appointed to meet LOML at 3:00pm the other day so she goes out to the bank etc. This guy rolls up at 1:30pm. Ive gone to see a client. My staff phone me on the mobile. First he wants a receipt, OK no probs, give us the money and its yours. No cash, he will transfer it when he gets home. We have a computer here do it now.... you get the picture. OK,....let us take a copy of your license (Im charging through traffic by now) "No way, want you think I am thief?" etc, etc.

My excellent staff kicked him out although he damaged the goods, now he's going to trash us on ebay. We have complained to ebay about him. There are some deadsh#ts out there. I didnt meet him but Im becoming a fan of sharia law.

So, it sounds like a good seller position would be to say you can pick it up, but payment must be cleared through the bank first. ?

I've had a few people want to pick stuff up, but none of them won the auction yet

You have to do this stuff for a while before you get hold of all the tricks of the trade, don't you?

i've used paypal and direct debit no problems,prefer direct debit then i know when and where the cash has gone and receipts to prove it.
