Coat Hanger Board

Hi All,
SWMBO wants a set of coat hooks put up on a gyprock wall. The set of hangers is not wide enought to reach between two studs and I am a bit doubtful of using cavity fixings for the possible weight. I have got a nice piece of pine that will go over two studs and can be screwed direct to them and the set of hangers screwed onto the board.

I have nicely bevelled the edges of the board and intend staining it to match the other furniture in the hallway. However if I stain it, then put it up on the wall and fill the countersunk screw holes, then sand down the filling and restain, the rest of it is going to become darker and the filled screw holes will still stand out. I am a bit chary of putting it up, filling the holes, then staining and varnishing it as there is a strong likelyhood of the stain getting on the wall.
My thoughts are to stain the bevelled edges and put a couple of coats of varnish on, mount it on the wall, fill the screw holes and then carefully stain the flat surface and then varnish that before putting the hangers on.

Does this sound like the way to go or anyone got any better idesa?

if it is only pine, get some buttons that fit into the holes (Bunnies should stock them).

Drill the holes for the fixings, stain the timber and the buttons. Then fix to the wall and push in the buttons.

If you're not going to swing on it you might use keyhole plates on the back

you can recess these into the back and then hang it on screws in the studs.

depends how much weight you want to hold...

Unfortunately a trip to Bunnies is a very rare event due to the distance. The only Bunnies in our area is down in Cairns and a trip to Cairns is an all day event.

I never thought of the keyplates and they might not ne strong enough with four or five wet coats, oilskins hanging on them.

I will give my original idea a go and see what it looks like.

I've put coat hooks up like that and I've just positioned a coat hook over the screw that fixes the timber to the wall. i.e. screw timber to wall, mount coat hook over screw.
