What Finish to use on an Interior Door?
I am in the process of restoring an internal 4-panel door made of Baltic pine in the early 1900's.
It was cleaned first with a mixture of Turpentine & BLO - 75:25 which was wiped off after being applied, followed by a light sanding.
I applied 3 coats of garnet shellac rubbing them in-between with 00 steel wool which enhanced the grain very nicely.
I am at the stage where the surface is now a mix of glossier and dull patches. I thought I would apply a last coat of shellac with 400G W&D paper to achieve a uniformly matte surface.
The next step will be to apply a durable matte or satin finish. Should I use hard wax oil ?
I understand that polyurethane isn't very compatible with the shellac undercoats.
All suggestions/ advice will be gratefully received!
Cheers
