    hello i have recently bought plans to build an 18 foot wooden ski boat.i havent had much carpentry experience so was wondering if i can pick some brains.but i CAN use a tape and have all the tools bar a couple.

    ...now THAT'S the spirit that made this country great. Obviously not one to shy away from a challenge! Best of luck IBNC, my guess is that much general w/working experience will not prepare you for the specifics of boatbuilding. Luckily there will be people with loads of experience somewhere on here. Is it a laminate-joinery job, or of a more classical individual plank design? I've always wondered how it might be to make a clinker hull.

    ty billrule its a 1960's plywood design.18.6 feet long with a weight of 725 pounds ..i guess 320 kilo's.i have been cramming sites everywhere on the net .glen l themselves have tip pages galore with pics and tips.the only one that scares me a bit is the chines (break .as a word.. features a bit)but i have some patience and ive been reading some things in here so feel sure ...that when in doubt....give a shout.ty for the welcomes ....oh and dam i made a bookcase once wish i had a picture.

    i dont now why i didnt think of this when i first posted.seems like im in a woodforum and didnt think wood.i have sent emails to csiro and wood mills when i shoulda asked here.
    whats is an australian equivelent of
    1-mahogany
    2-oak
    3-spruce
    4-douglas fir
    talk about slap yaself in the head

    (4-douglas fir), Oregon-the frame of my old ski boat is made from this with ply gussets in the corners.

    As for the others; I just know them as the names given.

    Was out at Naromine air museum and the spruce they used to build a replica of the Wright flyer was imported, so don't know of it's availability.
