vaernishing "northern hemisphere" wood
hi trying to find out an informed answer to why one cannot varnish IKEA'S solid beech benchtops. according to IKEA it's becasue it's a "northern hemispher" wood? i was wondering if it's necasue of some treatment the wood has to undergo to enter australia which would make it resist varnish
anyone able to help?

Sounds more like an IKEA ploy to sell some more of their product.
Ikea and solid I find hard to believe as most of their 'furniture' is melamine or sprayed MDF.Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

Probably because any runs or spills will end up on the ceiling!

Think Iains hit the nail on the head. Furniture sales people are just that, sales people tyring to fool you into believeing they know more than you. Fact is it works probably 99% of the time. They are not all like that though so any genuine sales people with good background in there field - dont take offence
In anycase I would steer clear of varnish.
Yes guys I am back! Well not yet, still stuck in the airport at Brisbane - although thats not a bad thing considering they have granted me full use of the Qantas first class lounge!Been over in NZ for a few weeks R&R. So Happy Easter to all!
Cheers....
