G'day JillB!
Any paint store or the big green shed or other hardware stores should have the steel wool for you.Russell (aka Mulgabill)

The two Australian brands I have tried crumb very quickly. The best steel wool I've ever used is made by a Scandanavian company called Trollul, but I haven't seen it in Australia. The best available within Australia by far is the 000 from Liberon (French). Their 0000 steel wool is much finer than the locally produced stuff and far outlasts it and without crumbing.
Horses for courses of course..

Can't say I have had a problem with Sifa crumbling but I usualy use it with a cutting oil mix of turps and linseed. I give it a very hard time but as soon as it is flattened too much I cut of a frsh pad. I saw that Tend had another brand at Artisans Retreat woodshow the other day but I don't recall the brand although from them it may be Rustins. I also only ever buy it in the roll and cut it with sharp snips. I never use the pads in the hobby packs and never just drag it apart. And never use it if it starts to rust because then it will just crumble.
WW, do you get the Liberon from the site above or can you buy it localy?

Mrs. Wood picked up a couple of rolls for me from a local retailer. I think there's a list of retailers on their web site.

Read an article in FWW relating to a project by an well known American woodworker (can't remember who) and he highly recommended Liberon.
Bob
"If a man is after money, he's money mad; if he keeps it, he's a capitalist; if he spends it, he's a playboy; if he doesn't get it, he's a never-do-well; if he doesn't try to get it, he lacks ambition. If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

I tried Rustin's 0000 and it was excellent. I wondered at the time if they simply sold repackaged Trollull steel wool. Is Liberon 0000 really Trollull or vice versa? It's such a specialised product and I can't imagine there'd be many plants producing the quality stuff.

I've heard steel wool comes from hydraulic rams.
