how do people mount them in their aluminium ute trays? do you just drill a few holes in the bottom of the toolbox and the ute tray and bolt it on or what?

    Within reason, yes.

I've helped some of my nephews fit these to their utes and thickness of material, both the box and the tray bed along with the possible end weight of the loaded tool box, need to be taken into account.

With one of them where he was carrying a shed load of heavy stuff, we made up some strips, 45/50mm wide seems to be what I remember and ran two of these along the rear and front. Did a similar arrangement under the tray.

Another nephew running almost no weight, we sourced some mudguard washers to spread the load.

Both worked well and as far as I know both are still going strong.

By the way, pretty much all of them leak water if the heavens open up. This can be rectified, more or less by ensuring the seals are correctly sized, fitted correctly, and the locking arrangement gives sufficient compression all the way around the door.

As well as above, it is important to mount them off the floor with 2 strips of say 50x8 or 10mm rubber from Clark Rubber or similar which will also seal the holes, and have a really good look under the tray before drilling, you don't want to drill through anything important, and you want to be able to get to the bolts/nuts as well, and I would go to the cost of stainless bolts and nuts so they won't rust out due to the ali box and tray.
