Hi all,
I have a concern in one of the office building I work in regarding smoke leaching in through seals in the windows from an outside smoking deck.
What I'm looking for is a source of a battery operated cigarette smoke detector.....
Anyone know where I can get one - I don't want to pinch one from Qantas....

employees...including me say we can smell smoke....Company says no you can't!

Give these guys a try, they are smoke detection specialists and should have something that is suitable
Mate never heard of a smoke setector just or ciggies but you can get two types of domestic smoke detectors now I'm talking about the 240v type here first type is Inoisation where the Detector has an ionisation chamber inside where by it keeps air levels (Whatever the levels are) at a Balance when the smoke gets trapped inside this chamber this activates the alarm
the second type is a photo-elect type where ...I think it actually looks for the smoke through some type of lens once the smoke passes the lens the alarm is activated but( I could be wrong with the operation on this one) but if you take a normal battery operated smoke detector and try it and it does not work I dont know what else you could try
Perhaps you could ask the local government agency that enforces the smoke free laws where to get one. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they responded with a puffed up chest saying. "That's our job! How can we help you?"
Re patty's post, Aldi had both types in stock a while ago, I bought the photo dretcor model for a hallway near our kitchen which goes off every time the oven door is opened, I couldn't see the smoke but it could.
The new one works a treat and doesn't trigger.
If your working with people who smoke then you will smell cigaretts the smell is on their clother in their persperation, :Smoker: :smokeing: :sweat: :sweatdrop: getting a smoke detector and trying to detect a smell ? for that you don't need a smoke/particle detector you need something you already have a nose :U .
If you are offended by the smell of your work mates you must have real problems when you step out on the street with all those cars busses etc :~ , perhaps some of munruban's options are the answer :D

Well no one in that area smokes at all. We have had people totally unaware of the issue come to the area and complain of smoke smells.
We are talking about a smoking area that gas about 20 people in it at times, its when this area fills that smoke is smelt inside the building.
Are there any outside vents on the deck external wall that is adjacent to your work area? If not get some petty cash and go and buy an Airwick plug in smeller as a smoke detector is not going to do a thing here.. I think if anything to get an absolute satisfation you would have to get an Indoor air quality meter or a co2 meter they are about $1200 bucks through a company called Farnell
or burn some incense so you can't smell anything else
Where I work you can't smoke within 10 metres of a doorway or anywhere near the airconditioning units. On cold days sometimes visiting smokers huddle near the entryways and the smoke is sucked into the building. Usually within minutes there are calls down to the guards to move them away. (then they huddle near the aircons :doh: )
Defence policy is no smoking within 10 metres of any opening to a building. Opening is defined as door, vent or window which is not sealed shut (closed is not sealed). Usually the Defence force policy echos some sort of civillian standard so it might be worth looking into. Then we get the idiots who lean against a pole with a bl00dy great no smoking sign on it and light up outside the gym:?:?.Quote:

I think the unit you might be refering to is a VESDA unit. Essentially a very sensitive smoke detector. From the little I know about them, I don't know how effective they are in larger areas with substantial air flow. They are often fitted in prison cells or police station cells as the air flow is not great and you don't want fires in those sort of places.
Pretty sure that they don't come cheap though and they have to be calibrated annually and monitored by means of a fire panel. They aren't the sort of thing that you buy and stick a 9v battery into.
However, even if the smoke detector goes off, the difficulty remains in establishing that the alarm was set off by the air entering the building from outside.
If you have to resort to this sort of action then, perhaps there can be an argument that things are getting just a little bit ridiculous.
Having said all that, I am going out to get rid of all that fresh air that insists on hanging around my house.

My point is only that if they are allowed to be sold, they must be allowed to be used in some reasonable way. They are not banned outright because: A) it probably wouldn't work; and B) they generate a generous revenue stream which is to the pollies like flowers to a bee. B is more important than A.
Growing up (in the Dark Ages, I admit) smoking just was. In the service the smoking policy was "smoke 'em if you got 'em." Cigarettes at the base Exchange were $1.10 a carton. :oo: Men's club parties were called Smokers.
Then, after the first 40 years of my life, it started: smoking areas only; no smoking inside the building; no smoking within 2 metres; no smoking in the pubs (in Victoria, anyway)--now that was going just a bit too far. But okay, live and let live I say. Just please, everyone (and I'm not talking to Midge at this point, who has been quite civil) stay civil and reasonable and quit looking for new ways to punish smokers just because you can. That road may very well lead to a place you won't want to be in future, when someone bans your favourite meat pie or beer.
I absolutely agree non-smokers have rights too. We all do. Let's try to play nice together. :wink:
OHS&W have an answer to this. If workers think there is a danger from chemicals or pollution, there is a procedure to put in place. After bringing it to the attention of your safety officer and the company management, push them for a controlled test.
This will be done with devices setup in the "correct" area, (not a different area to where you want it done). The devices will run continuously recording the atmoshpere without interference from anyone. You must all agree as to where the device is put by a qualified industrial chemist (no less will do). The chemist should not be an employee or staff member of the company.
If you are right and cigarette smoke is detected coming through the seals, you probably will not be told the results, and instead, you may well be sacked for some misdemeanour not related to this complaint of cigarette smoke.
If you are sacked, you will find access to those tests will be almost impossible for you.
I know, as I did this with a pollution of dangerous dusts. OHS&W did nothing to help me afterwards.

Maybe you could approach the health and safety rep or dept about the issue. Also i'm sure that if the legal ramifications of an employer especially a large one were understood then something may be done. I know that all Rio Tinto companies are removing smoking areas and banning smoking from all sites.
All the pro and anti smoking positions aside.
Obviously the interior of this building IS a mandated smoke free area.
So it should be totaly free from the stinking stuff.
My wife had a similar situation at a previous workplace with a similar resopnse from WHS
We are now seeing a a return to WHS polocy of the past in many areas.
The first reaction to any complaint will be to deny that any problem exists and those complaining are stupid or something similar.
The hope is that those complaining will just give up and the company..... particularly the WHS manager has to do nothing.
This is typical of the current lazy b#$@$^$d management style.
I doubt that you will find any device that will reasonably detect what your nose plainly tells you is there.
If you want this problem sloved you will need to be prepared to cause the lazy B some discomfort, you must make it cost him not to act.
Is this a customer or patient area.... lots of leverage there.
this may mean putting the complaint in writing thru the correct chanels reminding him of his obligations and the provisions of the law
going over his head, making a compliant and detailing previous complaints and inaction
taking it beyond the company system by envolving the union or the relivant regulator.
but make sure you are prepared to handle the heat and you are fully conversant with the facts.
Personaly I think the answer to smoking areas is not simply shoving them outside, because the smoke is not contained and directed to a harmless discharge.
Cigarette smoke is a persistent and agressive polutant and can travel large distances and thru lots of barriers and still remain ofencive.
there is a bloke who for years has smoked a particularly pungent brew of tobaco in an industrial estateI used to work in... you can often smell it driving past on the main road at 80Kmh nearly half a klick away if the wind is right.
the answer fo these areas in my opinion is an enclosed area with exaust fan extraction and an elivated flue..... basicly a spray booth for smokers.
positive containment, controlled discharge.

No personal offence intended and I know there are a number of smokers on this board who are carefull and courteous about how, when and where they smoke.
In fact I know many of them will not smoke in their own houses.
BUT
and this is directed squarely toward militant pro smokers.
There is no reasonable argument. Smoking is an unhealty, stinking filthy thing.
If you chose to smoke I have no problem with that, you have a choice.
Those arround you have no choice they must breathe the air.
Don't come bleating to me about smokers rights, you have no right to impose your stinking filthy habit on others, you have no right to endanger the health of others, you have no right to cause discomfort to others.

If you had persistent strong BO, you would be an outcast. If you had constant stinking flatulence you would be an outcast. If you were a pig and all over the floor you would be an outcast. there is no difference.
If you are a heavy smoker.....your sense of smell will be quite poor ours is just fine.
Look you know you should give it up, realy you want to give it up, there is no better time than the present...... go to the doc" see the chemist.
Give the filthy things away.
Its been discussed before.... the money from two years of smoking will buy you a shed and fill it with woodworking tools.
