A number of woodies were asking what a panel raising plane was for. So I figured a couple pics was worth a few thousand words...
The first pic shows what i was trying to describe in how the plane rides along the wood and forms the profile. In the pic the left side of the plane rubs on the top of the panel and the right side rubs on the bench. When the plane "bottoms" out on both sides you're done. It's important that the panel is flat on the bench or you'll end up with some parts thinner than desired. You can see that the skewed blade works well on end grain also.

Carl - yes, it sure did smoke a bit, but it blew away pretty quickly.
