Thanks underfoot and Jeff.
Jeff, my GP thought your suggestion worth investigating nonetheless so thanks again for the heads-up.
Just wanna say I appreciate the chance to dump here.
There's a limit to what the family want to hear.
Now the paw's settled down a bit, the cracked rib is keeping me awake at night.
Have discovered that there's a worse thing than tossing and turning, and that's not being able to!
So Ern it's been over 2 weeks now - are you riding to Groggy's turn? :D:D:p
What was it that Chopper said? :U:q something about cement.
Cheers
Ps really hows the pain going getting better/less/controlable yet.
LoL.
Pain's a shocker. Thanks for asking.
Get by on grog and ciggies. Can't stand the opiates any more.
So you rub it on ... :p
Well I saw a specialist physio and now have new exercises to keep the fingers and elbow flexible.
The old cast was by turns ineffective or torture so she fitted a thermoplastic splint with perforations so it breathes. It's v. Flash Gordon: silver with red straps.
Should see the looks I get walking down the street ... lol.
Continue to get great support from the TAC; they paid 2 nights motel accomm needed as the crash was in the country, inc travel costs for my partner to come down from Melb to ferry me around; and they'll cover 2 hours of gardening a month.
If you wish :D then it'll also keep away mozzies and midgies :2tsup:
Personally I prefer to take my medicine internally and let it work its way out = no evaporation and you get the full dose.
Regards,
Bob
PS you are certainly "sounding" better than your earlier posts :U
Yeah, I am chirpier thanks Bob.
The north paw is now close to useless but I've learned to open a bottle with the sth paw and two bare feet .. result!
Next challenge will be to trim the face fungus with the left hand .. that result may not be pretty.
Next week they'll x-ray the paw and if it looks OK the wires will be extracted and the wrist can come out of the splint when at rest.
Might then get a decent night's sleep ... lookshurry!
ps hard to manage the pain killers; the opiate sends me off nicely but is too much, and I end up sleeping the wrong way and wake up in in worse pain after 4 hours or so and that's the end of the night; the strong over-the-counter jobs have me awake ditto and another dose may or may not get me back to sleep.
LOL, the clinic nurse had it worse than me with a broken arm; getting the bra on, she said, the hubby could help with; dealing with other things wasn't quite as simple
Geez Ern, you would ha thort that the Flash Gordon splint came with a built in bottle opener :D. Good to hear you are up for the challenge of the facial follicles, soon you won't have to back up to the polishing wheel any more to wipe your bum. :oo:
It's a bummer managing the pain relief, especially when the novelty has worn off and all you want is some relief from having to deal with it all the time. I don't have any useful suggestions that haven't already been mentioned, but if you decide to to opt for Rum Relief, can I recommend a drop from Jamaica branded Premium Estate Origine. SIL gave me a bottle for Xmas, and it helped dull the pain of having to salvage my boat from an Island bay last week. Not too shabby the next morning - something I put down to the lack of impurities in the product.
Keep healing sport, I'm sure it will fade like the pain of childbirth. (I can't remember it hurting at all)
Maybe the TAC gardener will multi-task ;-}
GJ, I'm sure she would if I asked nicely, but then I'd stay awake worrying about her lack of rest :(
Peter, yes, it'll fade. Be good to speed it up with a little daylight saving tho :U
Now what happened with the boat? :oo:
Have been game enough to remove splint and 'sock' a coulpe of times now and rub some feeling back into the skin ... ah, bliss ... a weightless feeling for a couple of hours.
Half the palm still hasn't recovered full feeling though.
sorry to hear about this unfortunate event mate, but some good will come out of it.
Thanks GM.
I am sh*tting myself about whether a usable hand will come out of this, and am sceptical about orthopods - but I'm in their hands and can only trust.
They'll fix you up, after all, it's only mechanics and if you have pain then the nerves are working (says Dr Mick the draftsman:oo:)
Hope you start getting some better rest soon.
Thanks Mick; hadn;t thought of it like that.
We celebrated my daughter's birthday yesterday and a generous dose of NZ Pinot led to 7 hours of sleep :2tsup:
The K wires come out tomorrow at 9.30 all things OK, and not knowing what this involves of course Google came to the rescue. Need to know when my partner should be prepared to come and pick me up.
I'd thought a local in theatre under a soothing dose of Pethidine or the like.
Google returned 3 vids for heaven's sake.
And puke!!!
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgFwRaPmc2U"]YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.[/ame]
Course mine may be different, but maybe some of Rumpig's Bundy for brekky might be a good idea!
Ern, ear plugs will help too!:oo: Took my 12 year old son to the bone doctor to have several wires removed from thumb and wrist. Doc assured him he wouldn't feel a thing, and it wasn't too bad, but it sounded awful to me (and him):o
Erk.
Thanks for the tip Fred.
Might go in with portable stereo with the Ride of the Valkyries playing.
Or m/b helmet with std earplugs in place :-{
Cool. Can nauseate dinner guests with home vids, in surround sound :C
Won't have to do much cooking
good luck tomorrow
and with the amber fluid tops
invest in one of those coke bottle openers the corner stores used to have
Something like this

You'll have to get someone to affix it to the shed door though :D
I've one in brass on the shed wall - works well and is one handed
could rivet it to the splint, along with multi-grips for opening jars.
Well, the alignment is good and the wounds clean - only there's not enough bony mass (in the wrist GJ!) to take the wires out. Another 2 weeks.
Hand physio this a.m. was v pleased with the flex'y of fingers and elbow, & with cont'g exercise I should be able to regain full function of hand & wrist :2tsup:
PS thanks again for your support (and humour!) - it means a lot to me.
Esp thanks to those who emailed with advice or to share their own story. You gave me lots to think about :2tsup:
Congrats on the progress Ern. No doubt the physio will find some new way to make exercise painful for a while yet, but your goal of regained function will make it bearable. Something which has just crossed my mind whilst reading your post about lack of bony mass in the wrist is the question of supplements to assist with recovery. I'm sure you will get good professional advice on whether glucosamine/chondoitrin/etc will help with repairing damaged cartilage, but have you considered treating the bone damage with comfrey?
My mum is a keen herbalist, and keeps a goodly supply of comfrey growing in the garden. I have used it on all the breaks the kids managed whilst they were growing up, and regularly treat sprains and mountain bike-related damage on my own feeble carcass. Usually just a poultice applied directly to the skin and then held in place with a bandage overnight is the simplest treatment. You can also get it rendered into an ointment, which is more convenient in application, but several steps removed from the fresh herb.
Comfrey grows like a weed, and should be readily available in Melb. If you can't source any, let me know and I'll ask me venerable mama whether she knows anyone down there in the herbal network who can help.
Just a thought......
Thanks WP. yep don't mind torture in a good cause
Good call on comfrey. I used to grow it way back when but some years ago IIRC it was banned in Vic; an issue with side effects.
Any case, the fragments are knitting OK; they just need more time to build mass. Physio recommends Vit D and I'm taking multi's for good measure, also Glucosomine/Chondroitin just in case, and Bromelain for inflammation.
can't hurt; might even help
:d
Sounds like a slow and painful road to recovery Ern, but glad that you're on the way, and even more glad that it looks like you'll make a full recovery.
Cheers,
Dave
Thanks Dave.
It's a helluva relief.
Good to hear :2tsup:
Thanks Bob.
So the new wrist exercises have led to flare-ups afterwards but on the upside I've learned to dial in the meds to get a fair night's sleep.
A few days of quiet on this thread; I hope that's a case of "no news is good news". Perhaps life has just handed you that "Ctrl-Z" key after all (knowing that there are a few people around who actually care)!
- Michael
Thanks Michael.
My brother and his wife have been down for a while from Qld so that's been a welcome distraction.
The splint is now riding on the projecting padded tips of the K-wires, giving me curry, but there's plenty of time to experiment with different types of padding
Next week the K-wires should come out. :yipee:
And it's odd there's no Ctrl-Z but there is a Ctrl-Y :(
Ern stay positive mate ( met back up with in hospital when I broke my leg) hd a full cage around his from shin the knee he'd been that way for 2 years after coming of a his BMW on the Putty Rd. He now walk without a limp. I s looking at buy a new bike if he can get past the family first.
Besides look at Gardner or Doohan or any other number of old riders in the same boat.
Thanks wheelin.
Yeah, lots worse off than me.
Mind you, be easy to stay +ve if I'd done it like Rossi while making 30 mil a year!
The Fireblade's fixed and a kind mate will bring it home on Sat.
Thinking of getting a 500 cc thumper and joining in club classic races.
I was a poofteenth away from getting a Velocette Thruxton as my first bike at age 18. Wish I had; be worth a quid now.
Good news from the insurer.
Other side admits liability so I don't have to pay the excess.
Just as well; in hope I'd ordered some more goodies from Grahame at Home :-
Maybe you should get one of these Ern :p :D.
