Astrid a dovetail saw would be good.
I have some red gum, cypress boards that I can bring. I have larger pieces but that would need a chainsaw and bandsaw first.
I have a workmate bench with a heavy laminated top and a No. 7 dawn vice that I could bring but it is a question of Astrid having the space.
Based on what Astrid's bringing already she must be driving a ute or something :)Quote:

TS' bench is quite portable, in a wagon you should have no trouble at all. Unlike mine, which requires two people and tools to move!
Are you bringing kids along astrid? The BOM says it'll be in the low 30's on Saturday (not that they're to be trusted of course), so the kiddy pool might be an interesting new experience for my boy (only 7 months old) if you don't mind? We've been recycling water for the garden for almost 2 years now, haven't used mains water once in all that time, so I'm sure Melbourne Water can spare a few litres for the kids :)
Um, anyone else bringing children along? Up to now I hadn't considered catering for anyone other than BBQ/salad eaters, any special requests?

When ever I'm at a BBQ I always get lumped with the cooking, so I hope eveyone likes their snags black ;)

my kiddie pool is about 8' across and 18" deep with shade tent.
we can maybe half fill it but it will need to be watched every second if there are toddies around.
I once had the scary experience of somone elses 14 month old climbing in when the bigger kids were in too and adults only 6' feet away, she slipped over backwards and struggled silently as she tried to get up.
If I hadnt seen her from the corner of my eye she would have drowned.
the 8yos' just continued playing.
gives me chills even now.
On a lighter note Ill bring two chair as well.
dont think Ill bring the kids, nice to have a day off :U:U

Dear All,
I didn't realize that the Guitar making course I am attending continues on Saturday and Sunday (I only found out this afternoon) so I can't make the midday BBQ. However I will try and leave Eltham in the mid-afternoon and see if I can get down there by say 4 to 4:30 pm - hopefully some of you may still be around unless you have melted away in the heat. :oo:
Let apologise to anyone in advance who I can't meet because of this stuff up, I was really looking forward to meeting you all face to face.

Um, the workshop isn't as tidy as I'd like it to be. There's still dust and cobwebs everywhere, but it's functional.... just warning you in advance, I've seen some of the pristine workshops around here :- I didn't get a chance to pre-prepare anything for the plane-making demo, so I'll be starting from dressed boards :C

I have a piece of Cooktown Ironwood that I will bring we could make a plane from that. Look forward to the demo's.

I plan on being there. It seems that lots of people are bringing great hand tools so I might leave mine at home.
Does anyone need a lift? I'll be bringing my ute so I can carry a work bench or a lathe if necessary. I plan on leaving home about 9ish and I will need to leave the BBQ about 3PM.

Ahh!!! back from another Ubeaut meet, this time at the home of Dave and Jenny in Laverton, what wonderful hospitality and friendship all round. Met some old faces and many new faces(to me that is). A lovely lady turner in Astrid, who taunted us with olive wood she was going to bring! and then Greg was busy demonstrating and showing some superb hand tools(planes), forget the name , but absolutely wonderful. Helmut brought along his hammer and tool bench, and demostrated the fine art of hand planing, had a go but I sure would need plenty of practise. Scooter was there and so to Jim. Noel-Watson can't remember much of him, he will have to tell you himself!, KevJed-Kevin, Simon-SimonB, Wally and what a wally he was, Woodwork Wally, Skew and Sorren just to name a few, Neil and his wife called by with a box of goodies, and Woodborer -Rob, came in from the high country to have a yarn.

Always good to meet the faces behind the pixels and catch up with those we know. I got the impression there was some fast learning going on today and it was really interesting watching Thumbsucker and Dave hooking into making the plane (guys, the latest FWW has an article on it).
Glad to see Rob made it down from Tolmie (2 hr drive) looking well and not fretting over fire season :2tsup:

Aye, 'twas a pleasantly spent day; many thanks to Dave & Jenny for putting up with us.
Helmut (Thumbsucker) promoted the darkside all day, first starting to make a plane with Dave and Kevin(?), then a quick demo of dovetails, finishing with an explanation of using mortice chisels. I'd meant to take some photos of the plane as the WIP proceeded but... well... :B Fortunately Amos brought along some of his pens and Wally a couple of miniature captive-ring goblets, so I got my fix of turning too.
BobL made it later in the afternoon (smart man... things had started to cool off by then) and showed us a few pix from the luthier's course he's doing. Nice. Although I felt (and I think Astrid agreed) that it was a bit eerie seeing a group of darksiders clustered around Bob's lap-top... :innocent:
I"ve got to agree with Amos that was a great day and all thanks to Dave and Jenny for their hospitality This was a first for me and most enjoyable although I couldnt stay till stumps It was good to meet some of the faces behind the names and good to see Neil and Pauline call in as well . and I ended up with the other end of fidos bone [Cairns Ironwood ] to try a pen turn also Apparently something like "real hard "stuff, so I guess that the metal work lathe and some hss turning bits may be reccomended . anyway thanksDave & Jenny & to you all for a great day regards Wally
Well I eventually made it to the Melb-west gtg. Great to meet those that I could and sorry that I couldn't meet the others. I finally did get to eat some of the spicy chicken - I really liked that. Thanks Dave and gang. It's great to put the faces to the nicks.
Ladies and Gents, thank you all very much for a great day! We ate, we drank, we got very little actual work done :) Now it's time for a cold shower!
Special thanks to Neil for donating some product which most got to sample and to Amos for doing the cooking, you're a gentleman mate! I didn't take as many pictures as I'd intended to, mostly because I was too busy, but there were a few cameras about and I'll post some progress shots of the plane TS and I worked on tomorrow.
I hope everyone had as good a day as I did, just sorry that I couldn't turn off the heat :(

We all had a fantastic time and i really learned a lot.
Groggy put the best edge on my profile plane its ever had. and gave a great demo on sharpening.
Helmut gave the best demo and simple expanation on dove tailing (I might finaly get my head around it) and cutting a mortice.
Amos revealled the mystery and attraction of pen turning with some truely stunning examples.
Helmut and dave explained the difference between a block plane and a jack plane and spent some hot hours demonstrating the making of one.
Some great company and informative chats in kevjed, Sorren, Scew, NoelWatson BobL and all the others.
A special separate thank you to Jen (who's chicken took your head off)
who must have been marinading all the previous night.

Next time I will have less stage fright and actually finish making a dovetail. I do however I think some of the simple but important stuff often get left out in explanations by the more experienced dovetailers, as a bloody near novice, all those simple and stupid mistakes and ways around them are very fresh in my head. The sum of a 101 mistakes in handcut dovetailing should teach anyone. I should right up an idiots WIP to dovetails.Quote:
