HELP NEEDED TO FIND Seal material for windows and doors

Les, I called and asked for sales (details below), then said I wanted some weather seal for aluminium windows, known as 'mohair'. The guy said "ok, what size and colour?" and we went from there. I did ensure he knew it was not the adhesive stuff. There are a few measurements you must have, and accurate too! I thought I wanted 6mm (by eye) but it went a bit like this:

Him - "is that 6.9mm or 5.3mm?"
Me - "Erk, 'ang about" (rush off to get a ruler) "Ahh, 6.9mm".
Him - "Fine" he says (a bit like the missus says it)
Him - "Now, how long is the pile, 3mm, 5mm or 5.4mm?"
Me - "Ooh errr, (quick measure) 5mm"
Him - in his best Henry Ford voice "we only have black"
Me - "black will be fine, fine!"

PS. For anyone wondering why all the fuss over this stuff, my house is over 20years old and these seals have worn from 5mm down to about 3mm. For the north side of the house this means wind, water, noise and dust gets in where it shouldn't. A cheap fix for an annoying problem.

Thanks Greg. That would help me a lot when I go about doing some similar work. I have already replaced the wheels on some of the sliding doors and will do the others soon. I understand what you mean by getting the exact measurements. Had the same issue with getting the correct wheels which was only sorted by taking the old ones out.

Lessons learned.

The size of the seal is DIFFERENT between a window and a door! :doh::doh::doh:

The door (of which I have ONE) is 6.9mm, the windows are 4.8mm :gaah:

I have some spare door seal if you need it :B

BTW, Alspec were incredibly helpful with the second lot and gave me a significant discount when I explained what I had done. :2tsup:

Needed a laugh tonight, had a crappy day due to a tree that was meant to be a log on the ground when I turned up but alas, it was still standing tall with half of its head when I pulled up :((

I called Alspec here in Adelaide (Torrensville ph 8150 6960) who couldn't supply residential quantities. They put me in touch with a company called M & S Glass & Glazing in Magill (ph 8361 3188).

I took the window to them and was given enough mohair strip for two windows to try before ordering and paying for all the windows.

Turned out that because the windows were so old, early '70s, the size to fit was the same as the modern door size. So I'll get more on Monday.

I spent way too much on heating last quarter, so minimizing the drafts will save a lot.

The Brush Seals by Ravenand Moroday which are sold at Bunnings, Stratco etc. can beused in Aluminium doors and windows if the channel is 7mm wide.. Sprinkle TALCUM POWDER over the adhesive and in the channel. Theseal will then slide in easily .

So happy to find this thread. I was searching for a solution for my drafty 70's aluminium windows - I checked, and on the closing side the mohair seal is completely gone!!! So, before I decide if I can do the job myself, I would like to know how easy it is to "thread" the new seal into the window frame on all 4 sides- is it possible to do without unsrewing the entire frame?

Yes it is, you just slide it in the track and it moves pretty easily.
