It occurred to me that many people never really think about how to read the forums once they find a way that works for them. There are in fact a number of options available that are quite handy.
Here is a screen shot of the
New Posts forum window and six important components of the screen:
1 -

first unread post in the thread.
2 -

last post in the thread.
3 - Clicking on the number of posts in the thread will
return a new window listing all who have participated in the thread along with a post count of how many posts they have made in that thread.
4 - If you click on the thread title
the thread will be opened, however, where you are taken to will depend on your settings in your
User Control Panel (User CP) .
5 - Clicking on the Forum name
takes you to the forum described listing a page of threads for that forum.
