metho horror

Went down to the local Dulux Trade centre in the hope of getting 100% metho for shellac but with no luck. I explained to the bloke that regular metho has up to 10% water with can cause clouding.
His response was "to put it in a frying pan to remove the water content". I just about fell over!
I said "mate its pure alcohol!" and he said to my growing horror " oh, not over a open flame"

Hmmm. i could be wrong, but if nothing else I thought that alcohol vapourised at a slightly lower temp than water, so you get rid of the alcohol from the water, not the other way around. You'd then need some form of still to recover the alcohol.

Peter ... you are correct. Alcohol starts to evaperate at temps as low as 87 deg cel and should be completely removed by the time the water has started to boil. Hence the way we make alcohol to drink by distilation. Alcohol is removed from the yeasty mixture ( cant remember what it is called --- wort is for beer) and the water and sh*t is left behind

Irwing .... tell this Dic*h*ad who suggested you should boil the metho mix he is a complete idiot!!! :no: Hell end up killing someone wuith his idiotic advice.:((:((:((

:o I would recommend taking a frying pan back to Dulux and use it to adjust the bloke. :thyel:

The frypan's not good advice.
But this is not right either. If you distilled metho, the water and alcohol would boil together as a mixture and what is collected in the still will be more or less what you started with, same water content. You can't distil wet alcohol to any lower than about 5% water content.

I can get ethanol to 95%.......never any more. Although I once gathered enough 95% to put through again, and for a brief period the hydrometer indicated 99%, and 5 minutes later it was all back at 95%.
One of those things in nature.

Can you ask the guy if a non-stick fry pan is better, or will a regular one do? :doh:

Did you get some? if not i have the 100% stuff to make my shellac with, if you only want a small amount (not 10lts:o) give me a call 0404 000 738 and you can have some. I'm at Nerang.
