Refinishing a cherry stool

Hi there

I have a meditation stool made out of cherry that needs refinishing.

I was thinking of sanding with 150 then 220 and then going with poly.

But is there a better finish I could use? An oil or wax based finish? One that wouldn't stain clothing when sat upon?

Any clues appreciated.
