New Chum on the Block
Hi,
Woodworking has been a long time hobby of mine and it is great to stumble upon a forum like this. I hope to make good use of it - both ways.
I stumbled upon it while I was trying to find the scientific name for Brown Mallee. Is Brown Mallee the same as Brown Mallet?
I am in the middle of replenishing my supply of wooden pens, which I use for gifts and the occasional sale. Whenever I come across a new timber I keep the first pen in a collection, which now numbers in excess of 50. I like to catalogue each pen by both common and scientific name.
Brown mallee doesn't appear in the csiro common names list, but brown mallet does.
Can anyone help
Cheers

G'Day Ralph and welcome aboard. This site may help http://hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/mallee.htm while brown mallet is Eucalyptus astringens.

Mallee and Mallet are two differen t species of Eucalypt. Right now their scientific names escape me.

HI Ralph,
ever tried Mackay Cedar? The local wood turner's club turned a 10 - 12 foot pen here out of Mac cedar.. I think it is in the local Museum in Proserpine.. you can actually write with it....!!! Another unusual timber I am trying is Emu Apple - not a clue on the scientific name, but it is chocolate and cream in colour with distinctive grain.
Cheers
