Television aerial amplification ?

Hi. We have just bought a house in the Central Coast (NSW), in an area known for bad television reception. I noticed this mess on the wall in a downstairs garage. I assume it purpose is to amplify the television signal somehow, however I would like to confirm that and clarify just what it does. The little black box has 'power injector' written on it, and there is a cable socket marked 'to amplifier' which disappears into the ceiling, which I cant follow at present. Can anyone confirm what this contraption does and what 'power injection' is.
