How to stain hardwood floors

G'day, Just a few questions, & hope they are not too silly! We have decided to pull the carpet up & stain our Hardwood floors, & my handyman of a hubby has decided to do them himself!!!! :oo: So @ this stage the carpet is up, the bits of wood to hold the old carpet are off, & its looking good. So can you guys share with us, some do's & don't's & all those little bits of info you have please. Hubby did go to Bunnings & do a "Learn to Sand floors", & he is quite confident. (so am i, but i have a little doubt...hence i'm here.lol)
How best to stain, & how long to wait for it all to dry & settle.
