Rule of Thumb for Cornice size?..

'Evening Gents,

I poked a bit around this Forum, as well as on the Net in general, but I can't seem to find anything in the way of a "Rule of Thumb" for what size cornices to use around the edge of a ceiling...

The ceiling height is your bog-standard 2.4m, and the rooms are smallish for their type. I was going to go for your straight-forward domestic garden-variety Cove, and it's quite obviously going to be a toss up between 75mm and 90mm. I didn't want to overpower the walls, but mind you, I didn't want to underpower them either... :?

Any thoughts anyone?

Personally I would go for the 75mm, the 90mm will have the effect of making the walls seem shorter (or ceilings lower).

I'd also go smaller on standard walls in small rooms. Seen 90mm in small houses and it doesnt look that hot in my opinion.

Rule of thumb is 55mm at 2400 75mm at 2550 90mm at 2.7


75mm is just passable at 2400 IMO 90mm is definitly a no no.

This is what we do in about 95% of homes with cornice.

Wilco, Rod. It will have to be 75mm, though. I just couldn't risk my dissatisfaction with 55mm.
