Marker pen showing through paint

I have just had a small extension built. The existing external brick wall has become part of one wall of a new bathroom.

I have near-filled the mortar joins with polyfilla, and skim-coated the bricks with same. When sanded smooth, it is a nice rustic effect.

I have put on one coat of an acrylic sealer/undercoat.

There is a small area of writing on the brick from a red marker pen, that has clearly shown through the sealer coat.

Does anyone have any suggestions for covering/removing the markings?

Marker pens are notoriously hard to seal. The best thing to try is a leafing aluminium paint, in other words a paints that has a very shiny silver look, not the metallic aluminium look. Some of the spray can manufacturers have this silver and it will seal the marker pen.

The metallic silver used in these paints floats to the surface and the aluminium platelets (leaves) overlap and seal anything underneath. Also excellent for sealing water stains in plasterboard, ie in ceilings.

When marker pen is used on plasterboard the best removal is to cut out the area and patch over with plaster!!

It it horrid stuff.

Maybe I will just chip, or angle-grind the brick away. Then re-fill it. Its only about the size of a 50c piece.

Gday there,

Buy a can of Zinzer Shellac based sealer. About $13 bux. Comes in a spray can which is red and white. Shake it well, give it a squirt, then another when it dries up (about 5 mins). Guarantied!

metho based sealer...will dry very-very-very fast. 100 or more kids bedrooms, works like a treat everytime.

Just paint some oil based paint over the pen mark and allow to dry for 24 hours. You can buy in a spray can form which saves you having to clean brushes. When building anything in the future being anything from timber to plasterboard, use pencil as it can be painted over with acrylic paints.
