might throw up a good quality pic, eazi, for a start.
is this cellulose lacquer you've got there or a poly/ two pac ?
you can get some 100% gloss lacquer and spray it over the top.
Try 800 wet paper between coats. When finished spraying your lacquer, give one last light go with 1200 then use an automotive cut and polish but avoid using silicon waxes. Finally give it a good wax polish and it will really shine.
Note, if you are using a porous type wood, you really need to fill the grain first otherwise you will never get it smooth and shiny with lacquer. Poly urethane would be a better solution as it will eventually fill the grain if given enough coats.

Forget poly its a lot of time to get a great finish.
Use a lacquer type sanding sealer 2 0r 3 coats, light rub between coats then start lacquering, you'll need to spray 4 to 6 coats of full gloss and it will come up like a mirror
I am assuming that you are talking about Nitrocellulose laquer or estapol
there is a trick you can use as long as you are very careful
allow the job to stand for 24hrs after you have finished it then use the thinners of the product that you are working with and apply it to a very fine cotton rag and rub vigorously along the grain of the job. but be very careful. this brings up a shine in any type of finish

If you are using NC or PreCat Lacquer, you will find it will be availabe in what you may call HiGloss which paint manufactures call 100% gloss.
You will get only get this 100% gloss if you have a good sealer.
You can also buff the finished top coat with a buffing compound.
Good film build will also assist (ie good quality Lacquer) and or 2 or 3 top coats.
