Weight separators for sash window cord/weights

Hi all,

What type of wood/thickness etc do people usually use to separate the weights/cords inside the box of a sash window.

I have two windows side-by-side and therefore four weights - and nothing to separate them. I assume there would have been at least one separator (and probably two). No sign of a separator...:?

So, the questions are:

a) What type/thickness of wood to use?? I've also heard of plastic being used???
b) How the heck do I get the separator inside the box (without pulling the whole box frame to bits). I've got access to the weight pockets etc.

Many articles mention this, but not HOW to do it.

The divider is not always required as the width of the centre box may allow enough room for weights to pass without risk of colliding. The other one is called the feather or slip. It seperates the weights front to back as there is usually not enough clearence for them to pass without risk of collision as they swing. The feather is sliped through a slot in the top of the frame and just hangs there by a nail/dowel through the top. Common materials for the feather is usually the same as the window frames about 3/16" -> 1/4" thick. Virtually any material could be used as long as it stays straight. If the box frames are curently installed the only way to gain access would be to remove the top inside lining. Drop string with small weight (lead washer work well) through feather slot ... fish out through pocket .... tie onto feather and pull back up. Very fiddly and would be a real PIA. Feather would need to be flexable as you will need to twist it to feed through pocket. Thinking along your thought of plastic if it is flexible enough you may have enough clearance in top box to be able to feed it through from the top.

A second thought on plastic. 40 -> 50 mm wide cover strips used for villa board etc would be ideal as they are about 5mm thick and reasonably flexable. Should be readily availiable at your local hardware and cheap.

I might try your VBoard idea as I'm a bit stumped on this one. It should be a relatively simple process but I have this feeling it will not be. :C

If all else fails I'll go without. But, I fear, this is one reason the cords/system failed in the past. I have a feeling some goof in the past had a look and thought "mmm, what's a bit of wood doing in here? I'll just remove that.."
