Installing Additional Venting

I have been told by a building inspector we need to put more venting under the house.

Is the best way just to buy the vented bricks from bunnings, cut out an existing brick via the mortar and reinstall the vented brick with new mortar?

Is it that simple?

Here's a few more words: you can get these solar powered fans that go in a brick vent that are supposed to increase the ventilation without needing more vents. Here's one I know of: http://www.envirofan.net.au/index.htm

I've put the envirofans in for people. To stop the draught they create basically "shortcircuiting" you need to block off adjacent vents in the same room, to assist in establishing fully effective flow. If you don't shroud them, they will just draw air from the cavity too.

Damien - hit the building inspector up for how much extra venting in mm² - after all, you are paying him and he should be able to calc it off the BCA and then stipulate more if needed.

If the brickwork is natural, use off-white cement in your mud. NOT the regular grey! :oo:

Actually the inspection was carried out over two months ago, but I am just getting around to fixing it. (It was a pre-purchase inspection)

I will fit a few where there doesnt seem to be much ventilation and see how it goes.

Your working figure is 6000mm² (actual ventilation, not counting crosswires etc)/metre of external wall. :wink: (BCA 3.4.1.2)

Crikey, this was harder than i thought, i tried to use a drill bit to cut the mortar out (lots of holes) , but in the end it still didnt work so I took to the brick with a hammer :o.

Got the desired result eventually. BUT there has to be a better way, I ended up only installing 1 vent. Any other suggestions for cutting the mortar out (Special tool)????

so those ozitos have a chisel bit that goes to work on the mortar? Is that the idea?

It has a chisel bit that takes the brick out in about 1 minute, the brick is not savable.
If you need to save the brick you will have to chisel out the mortar. :-
