Dyna Bolts How to get them out!!

Hi Guys,

I have pulled down the old carport, ready for the new one, except 1 thing.

The brackets have been attached to the brick wall with dyna bolts, I need to get them out, as the beam for the new carport will go there.

How do I get them out? Or do I have to cut them off at the wall?

Carport going up Thursday, so I need to sort it out over next 2 days.

Belt them with a hammer until they disappear into the brickwork.

I've been able to get them out in the past by tapping the bolt back in a bit and then using a pair of needle nose pliers to grab the sleeve and wriggle it out. It depends on the state of the bolt and how tight the hole was. But I only bother with that if I want to reuse them. EDIT: Note this only works with the single-part sleeve version. You've got Buckley's chance of getting the two parts ones out, although it can be done if the hole is loose enough.

If all else fails, cut them off with an angle grinder.

Its not that difficult if they aren't rusted in. I use a claw hammer, a pair of pliers and/or a pair of vice grips.
1/First try to wriggle the whole thing out a bit with vice grips to make sure its not bottomed out in the hole, but don't pull on the nut if its still on...and don't crush the parts together!
2/Gripping the outer sheath part gently with the pliers, knock the bolt part back in the hole but allowing it to slide in the sheath. This will release the wedged end of the bolt from the sheath.
3/If you succeeded in that you may be able to with draw the outer part first then the bolt with follow. Whatever happens, you want the outer bit pulled on, not the bolt itself!
4/If not, grip the whole assembly firmly with the vice grips, twist and pull it out. If its still refusing to budge get the claw hammer underneath and lever against the vice grips. Alternatively knock the claw onto the sheath (wedge it between the claws like a nail) so it binds to the inner bolt and lever out in stages.

At work I knock the claws of my pry bar around the tube and lever it out. But I only do this if the hole is needed again! otherwise they get knocked down (If the last sod drilled the hole deep enough!)

I managed to pull one out with pliers, the others have tight holes. I must admit I did not try to hard as it 36degrees here and I was in full sun :oo:.

I will give it another go in the morning, I will try knocking them around a bit with a hammer and use your extraction methods 1st, then I will try banging then in, failing that I will use the grinder.

I am just a little concerned that the carport guys may want to put thier bolts in where my old ones are. So it probably would be better to get them out. :2tsup:

This is the reason I will no longer use dynabolts or loxins. A time will usually come when you want to get them out. I now use Ramset plugs even for larger fixings where I use coach screws.

Hard to imagine why they would need to put their bolts exactly where the old ones were.

Hi all

I was mainly concerned with the ones wither end. they are the bolt from the old carport (illegal, dodgy etc etc) I gather it would be the same height.

Anyway, I banged them a little with the hammer and thye pulled out relatively easy. All gone and patched ready for painting tomorrow morning.

I job done 1000 to go.
