13mm or 19mm boards

Hi, what a great forum!!

We're currently ripping up an ikea floating floor (it was a cheap option and has done the job remarkably well). The replacement will be proper floorboards and like lots of other posts, we're totally confused.

My understanding after searching for posts on here is that if the boards are laid on battens over concrete the battens should be hardwood - after going into a few showrooms it appears most use softwood only and just nail to this.

I've had it said too, that the best way of laying would be on top of ply, trowel glued and then nailed.

Sooo, looking at a supply/laid price with Boral boards it appears that 19mm boards on battens is approx the same pricing laid as 13mm boards on ply. If I accept the fact that the 13mm will get two less sandings in its lifetime it appears its the better option as we get a better method of install.

Or am I missing something....:rolleyes:

You are quite right IMO. Over ply would be better and you would be more satisfied. Less flex to fiddle with the joints over time. :)

T&G layed over Ply is probably the best installation to use. Don't forget to install a moisture membrane under the ply.

As for resanding, Our 12mm solid wood Overlay has a 6mm top just the same as the 19mm T&G. so you will get the same usable life from the floor.

The main reason people go for pine battens is due to penny pinching. They don't want to pay for hardwood battens which they don't see. But when they have problems with the floor due to moisture ingress etc etc, they scream their tits off cause the hardwood flooring has pulled away from the soft pine battens.

Remember....You get what you pay for.

and just when I think I have it sorted I'm now told the 13mm boral boards don't come in the long lengths that the 19mm ones do. Don't make it easy do they, decisions....

Yes, but there is a reason the boards come in shorter lengths,and, it's all for your benefit.

Anyway, stick with the 13mm boards, even though they are shorter it makes for an interesting looking floor with a lot colour and grain variation.

I would stay stick with 19mm, sorry to confuse you! personal preference! they come in shorter lengths as if they were similar to 19mm lengths they can twist and warp.
