G'day Neil - I have a bit of a preference for Black Japan (Feast Watson) as a base colour for staining. Cut it with turps for teak and lighter stains. Add a bit of red universal tint for mahogany etc. Used neat and wiped and off in almost the same action can give a walnut (depending on the base colour of the timber).
Just one warning. It has a pretty fierce dryer in it so don't leave it sit on the surface too long before wiping excess off or you could end up with a painted surface rather than stained.
Years ago I used to nick into the council depot and pinch a bit of their tar and use this for a base stain. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/eek.gif When cut with turps it is almost identical to the Black Japan.
Hope this helps a bit.
