Icey Looking Decking after being oiled??

Hi Guys,

Im new here so bare with me :D

Im in Melbourne/Australia and we are just getting over winter, very cold nights and even colder mornings.

We have Merbu decking 54sqm and we oil it every 3mths or when we basically see it getting tacky.

We oiled it at 2.30pm when the sun was out at about 14degrees, although the night after at 7pm when it was very cold we noticed half the decking looking abit white...almost like that icy look.

We have a shade sail on half of the decking and under that it didnt look white but the parts that there was no shade sail it had that white/dry look.

We gave it a secound thin coat last night and had a look this morning, it was 6degrees and some parts had that icy look, but no where near as much as it did last night.

Should i be concerned? Or would it be the moisture/cold wind iceing the decking?

Now:

1) Are you saying you are oiling in the late afternoon early evening?
2) Are you saying that the weather is just turning from winter to spring? or has spring already arrived?
3) Are you saying that you have left your sail shade up through winter?
4) Are you saying that over night the part you oiled and left out in the cold night air has what appears a glossy look to it while the part under the shade doesnt?
5) Are you saying that you are oiling the deck when its 6 degres?

I hope you read the instructions, is there an instruction on the can that says something like "applied with best results at temps 20 - 30C" then again maybe it wont but Im sure if you read it it may tell you

Welcome aboard, I think the dingo has it correct there. Check the side of the can, you will probably find that they warn not to apply if the temp will drop below 10 during the drying time... or something to that effect.

being an oil, wipe any excess off and apply when the conditions are right

I did read the can and it didnt say anything about tempreture :?

The thing that concerns me is that has it ruined the deck permantly, or is it a matter of it wearing off?

Im getting my partner to have a look when he gets home tonight, i have a feeling its only happening when its really cold.

As I have several times now welcomed you I shall move on without wasting my breath again. :doh:

Now as I see it you can do several things...

1) rub back the whole deck and start again
2) rub back the part that appears "white and icey" and start again
3) keep putting more on it
4) do nothing

There will be results to each of the above your choice which you do and your responsibility for the end result of your choice.

Although, im pretty sure it is only because of the cold conditions at night.

Hopefully when i get home it will be all gone seeing as the sun is out and its a beautifull day. I dont think [well i dont hope] its nothing permanant.

If it was permanant it would be all over the decking?

Chrystal what type of stuff are you using?... If its got epoxy type resins in it its possibly a "blush" that you can get rid of pretty easily

Actually thats what it sounds like... an after blush that some of this stuff gives off... I know in boat building when the epoxy goes off it can quite often set up a white blush to the timber

Can you try several methods of removing it on an out of the way place?... just a small area try rubbing just water and let it dry... then try a LITTLE terps and let it dry... that sort of thing... but only do a small area thats not going to stand out!

Although thinking about it... have you taken the shade sail down to see if its actually there as well? the shade could be hiding it from your view

It very easy to notice it, especially at night time.

Good news :) i was right it was just the cold wind. I went home last night and the sun was still out and everything was fine, i looked again around 8ish and it happened again and thats when it was freezing cold :)
