Hi,
I purchased some long life globes yesterday and replaced the conventional ones (3 in each lamp). However when I tried to dim them with the control (dimmer) switch they stayed at the same brightness.
I tried it with 2 normal type globes and 1 long-life one in the same lamp and although the long-life one stayed the same, the normal ones did change in brightness by using the control switch :?.
Is that normal?.

Sorry to say but you can't use long life globes on dimmer switches.
Your dimmer has to be capable of dimming fluorescent lights for use with the long life lamps.
You are able to buy dimmable CFL lamps but they arenot the cheap ones available, you will need to ask about them at a lighing store I think

They are good lights but the standard 11W downlight globe is $29 which I am happy to pay.........but is anyone else? Hate to think how much the dimmable might be...well what do you know........$36!! http://www.neco.com.au/product.asp?pID=638&cID=47
Can I just verify something here.
Do you have to get specific dimming fluro globes or can you get a dimmer switch put in that will dim the normal fluro globes?

Dimmable CFLs use a switch not a dimmer to control them
a dimmer uses phase controll to change the amount of power going to a lamp, cfl lamps are not compatible with this
A standard type (long) flouro can be configured to be dimmable but needs special wiring to make it a success, different tubes have different success in being dimmed with this approach
