ban on power tools

I had a quick look around the forum and am suprised that mention hasn't been made of the hair brained idea of a Sydney council alderman in the paper today.

This goose wants a ban on anyone using a lawn mower or power tool on weekends so people can have a quiet weekend. This is to come in force on both afternoons Saturday and Sunday

Seems a similar law exists in parts of Europe, Germany for one.

Question: How do people who work a normal week mow lawns or do DIY??
I suppose you are expected to work even longer so you can pay for someone else to do it on week days

These people are voted in by flat dwellers.

Maybe you should respond with a suggestion that Sydney Council can only collect rubbish between the hours of 9am and 4:30pm on alternate weekdays and never on Wednesday:rolleyes:

That should make for peaceful suburbs.

...or banning council members from imbibing alcohol during working hours. Including lunches.

According to my imperfect understanding, the People's Republic of Berkeley California has outlawed leaf blowers. Glad I don't live there, but if I did I'd use a flimsy (noisy) metal leaf rake on exposed aggregate concrete driveway; that oughta put 'em in a swivet.

Luddites of the world unite - Sydney is your new haven or should that be heaven.

Get this pollies email, phone etc and mail, phone bomb him - politely - and point out the error of his ways.

If he persists - remind him of the election date and that you will actively support his opposition.

I'll probably get shot down in flames, but I think it's not such a bad idea,at least for the Sundays.

To not have a pleasant Sunday afternoon BBQ spoiled by inconsiderate neighbours starting up their lawn mowers etc just when you're ready to start relaxing would be great. Especially as they could have done it in the morning.:((

As for woodworkers if they can't organize their work so that all the machining is done in the morning then they will just have to use darkside methods.

All it should take is a little bit of thinking, planning and organising to cope with noise free Sunday afternoons. Same as on Anzac day morning.

I fire up whatever in the shed any given time after I finish my 9-5 work on a weekday and finish no later than 7:00 with my machinery. Saturdays and Sundays 9:00–7:00. Doesn't worry my neighbours on all sides as we all have sheds with various p/tools etc. Unless the neighbour interupts with some VBs, then it's tools down for the rest of the arvo/night.

(need a great big smilie of a p/tool firing up) :2tsup:

I can see where you're coming from Peter, but there are a lot of people who have Sat and Sun mornings to sleep in, take the kids to sport, shiftworkers etc. Not to mention those who work Sat mornings. I reckon it could be very inconvenient to a lot of people.

How about we also ban shopping on Sundays as well, I remember the days when family spent time together on a Sunday, not going to the shops but a picnic or beach or something.

The 24hr economy isn't good for people, if you think back, its seems that we had a lot less problems in this country when it was half day shopping on sat and no shopping on sunday at all.

As for people not using power tools on a weekend well then move to the country!

It's true that it could inconvenience some people, maybe even a lot of people, but to have Sunday afternoons free from the noisy tools, in particular lawn mowers :( and leaf blowers :( , and routers from non soundproofed garages or tin sheds would be worth it.

Don't forget if it came in you would take it into account in planning your weekends same as you would take into account driving kids to sport or sleeping in.

I can still remember the good old days when hardware shops closed at Saturday lunchtime and you took that into account by making sure that you had all the bits needed for your project before then. It takes planning but if you're doing a woodworking project you should plan for everything you need and that includes scheduling machine time, etc, to within the allowable times.

BTW you wouldn't be sleeping in near me for it's in the mornings that I use my powertools.

Why not the other way around, if a few want unlimited use of noisy power tools then maybe they should move to the country.


We live in a complex society, rules are made for the majority so that society can function properly and in harmony. One afternoon in a week to be made noisy power tool free is IMO quite reasonable.

It's simply a question of the majority being allowed to enjoy their lives peacefully without noise pollution one afternoon a week. Next you'll want to be able to use powertools after 7PM.
