I too find them annoying but then again I'm grumpy. (Which is much better than being Gumby)
I'm pleased that I don't know how to use them, apart from the one that fell into my signature.....and that probably took me two days!
I reckon we should say what we mean (smiley) (smirk) (tee hee)

For those who don't know how to use 'em:
Go to User CP > Edit Options > Message Editor Interface and set it to Enhansed Interface - Full WYSIWYG Edeting > Save Changes Next time you make a post etc all you have to do is click on the Smilie you want and it will be put into the meassage automatically.

Well, the research I've seen says that in face to face communication, 55% of what is communicated is from physiology (smiling, body language, etc), 38% from tone of voice, and only 7% from the words themselves.
Had a contest with some friends once to see how many things we could communicate with just the word "mate".
So when we type in our words, we are cutting out 93% of our communication. That's why so many people take things the wrong way in emails (and forums).
I reckon anything we can use to improve that is a good thing. Sure the smily faces are a poor substitute for the real thing, but better than nothing.
But in respect of Craig B who started the thread, no smilies in this reply.
