Bagging old sandstock brick wall

Hi guys

I have an old terrace in Sydney (100 years old) and the walls have been stripped back to the original sandstock bricks.

As you would expect, the mortar is falling out and a fair few bricks are disintergrating. This all means that the dust from these things falls onto our polished floorboards.

I want to "bag" the really bad walls with a tinted render and want to know what I need to do to prepare the surface of the bricks etc. Do I simply vacuum as much "crap" as I can from the wall and then hit it with Boncrete and the bag it? If so, what is the ratio of Bondcrete to water?

Vacuum sounds good. There are sealers on the market specifically for this job Try CCS on 9756711 They also sell oxides. A couple of tips:-

Measure out your render mixture accurately,especially your oxide so you can reproduce the same colour every batch.

Wet the wall down first and keep it moist using a garden sprayer or similar.

Wear gloves and use hessian to do the bagging.

Also, I forgot to mention that the walls are internal so I need to be careful with how much water I splash around.

Hello lateral,we usually use a fairly weak coat of bondcrete first as it is more "spreadable" and that seals it enough for a stronger second coat to be applied.I think you might be better served to get one of the acrylic precoloured mixes (such as Rockcoat)and trowel it on and then use a sponge etc to get the pattern you want as that will be alot cleaner for inside work.I think you'll find one of the premixed renders alot more forgiving to work with also.We have just finished rendering a house with Rockcoat PM 100 bagged render and it is a good product to work with.We are not professional renders but did not have too much trouble getting it on flat.They also make a precoloured coating called Amour to go over the render .We are applying it at the moment and it also seems to be a very good product.It is applied with long napped roller.I hope this helps.Regards Terry

Lateral CCS is Concrete Colour Systems. I've used the prebagged render mix that Terry referred to many years ago - it is a good system but I remember it being expensive. You can also buy a product called Render Aid which seams to be a clay type of substance that makes your mix very "fatty" so its easier to use but as it is brown it will throw your colour off if youre going to go with light or pastel shades.

Try this link lateral http://www.rockcote.com.au/ I said there are lots of similiar products about though.A bag of PM100 render will be $15 here in Wagga.Coverage depends on how thick the coat is of course but you can apply it fairly thin (around 3 to 4mm )Anyway it could be an option for you mate.Regards Terry.

Why not replace the rotten bricks then repoint the whole wall followed by a sealer?

It will look a whole lot better than a bagging job.

There are too many bricks to replace. There will be other walls that I will not bag so as to retain the great look of the sandstock.

I have seen a few other walls that have been bagged and then painted and they look pretty good. I am thinking of adding some oxide so as to add some colour.

I will call rockcote and have a chat with their techo's...
