Timber screen

I am looking at creating a timber screen from the underside of my roof joist to just below the fence line (about 600mm) to create some privacy on my deck. I am wondering what the best option for this is. The deck is 8m long with the post centers roughly 1700. Based on anything around 40mm wide I will need about 100LM. I thought about western red cedar but might be a little pricey. If I can get primed pine with pencil round top and bottom that would be a good option too as far as looks go, or would it?? I would really like to keep the timber under the $2-$2.50/LM mark. I am in western Sydney so even a preferred supplier would be great.

heh jb, I am just in the middle of building a dividing fence right now with slats (bit windy today to be up a ladder....), and am going to use 70mm decking hardwood across 1800 centres posts, with a verticle 70/35 pine screwed into the boards from behind (will keep them from buckling). My spoacing between will be only 5mm, but mines a fence. The one i did for the parents looks very modern, and is 70mm hw decking screwed to 45/45 duragal posts with about 35mm gap between each board - and it hasnt sagged.

hw feature grade decking can be got for under $2-00/m @70mm. 40mm made for the job dressed battens are going to be hard to find at a reasonable price. At least decking timber seems to be a pretty competitive business.

I have a fair bit of decking left over from when I did the deck floor. SWMBO mentioned once or twice about using it and I said that the posts were too far apart and that it would sag and twist. I would would not here the end of it if I decided to use it but it would not cost me anything to do it. The lengths are not in as good a shape as they day I purchased them. Twisted and bowed, quite badly some of them and I really didnt want to use timber that wide (86mm mine). If I go down this road, what is the best fixing method and what is duragal?? (some kind of square gal tubing??)

pharmaboy what is the spacings of your verticals? and are they freestanding ie; not attached to the floor .
Also the one you did with duragal did you use timber verticals as well?
How about some pic's.

Pics would be great. Been browsing the web looking for a picture of the finish that I am looking for. Im thinking 10mm gaps for mine. My slats will run horizontal the length of the deck.

on the 45 shs duragal, its about 1900 spacing between posts that are simply bolted to the deck sub floor - fair bit of flex to them, but have survived some misshaps with falling umbrella without problem -0 because of the 30mm gaps they take no wind load worth worrying about. tek screws as connectors (PITA that is!)

Current wall is timber 90/90 h4 tp at 1800 centres, but will have aanother 70/35 vertical (not on ground) that will be screwed to the back of the decking boards - I saw this done at a project home, provides some extra protection from twisting and sagging with the 900 centre support - makes the wall all act as one.
