What to get for a fellas 40th birthday?

I have a erm... friend, yeah that's it, a friend, who's turning 40 soon and he has no idea what he wants. SWMBO is pressuring me for what I, ah I mean he might like but this is tough.
SWMBO: New electric razor?
Me, I mean him: "old one still works"
SWMBO: fly rod?
him "wouldn't use it in Brisbane west much"
SWMBO: "radio controlled plane"
him: might be fun, for the first week, gonna be a dust gatherer.
him : a boat?
SWMBO: sarcastic laugh
He thinks he'd like to hold out a bit longer b4 getting a set of Japanese chisels but SWMBO is happy to spend that much on him :eek: (i'm not sure there isn't something going on between them)
No other tools I want that I can currently afford or fit in my meagre space, He!, he!, I mean he can fit in. So over to you lot. Any ideas for gifts <=$600
for a fella turning 40? You don't need to know me, just after ideas, and one of you might just have one crazy enough for me to like.

I'm with Steve. Get a LN plane.
You'll have it for the rest of your life and you'll never forget who gave it to you.

I got a LA smoother for my 50th. It's still my favorite handtool.

A good mattress for the bed and tools/materials to convert your household steps into ramps... now that you've hit 40, it won't be long before you learn to really appreciate 'em! :D

Damn this means I have decisions like this to look forward to as I climb the ladder to 40....:eek: :eek:

I always buy Grecian 2000, for mates that hit 40.

50 yrs sees a pack of incontinence pads.

60, well no call as yet, but maybe something creative will come to me.

Incidentally, there's a set of 8 used Nip chisels on EPay for $100 last time I looked.

a LN plane, I'd suggest something more upmarket but, beside your mate being 41 before it arrived, there'd be nothing to look forward to when he turns 50 :-)

Thanks fellas for the ideas! SWMBO says no to the LN plane since I am 3/4 way thru tuning a set of old Stanleys. The 4 1/2 is working beautifully too. If I get the viagra, I probably have to get the new matress and ramps immediately :eek:
Grecian 2000 is not a bad idea, if I can use it on my beard. I thought this would be the only hair on my head by the time I turned 40, but my ears and nose seem to be going out in sympathy to the noggin. It's sprouting in all sorts of unwanted places.:rolleyes:

The LN chisels might be good. I've been waiting to hear from someone about a comparison to japanese chisels.

I can't compare them to Jap chisels because I don't own any Jap ones but the LN bevel edge chisels are the duck's guts!

I love using mine.

Beutifully made, superbly balanced and they really hold an edge.
