No worries mate, expensive from memory and minimum buys etc.
I ended up just using fruit packing boxes and a saw to shape them, but looks was not important in my application.
I thought it would cost me a bit,but I picked up 1 piece about 1 mtr sq and 150mm thick (it was an off cut) and he just charged me $5 ,which I thought was pretty good.
Are you looking for the stuff made out of individual styrene beads or the continuous sheet stuff? I'm looking for the sheet stuff but it is a B****r to find anyone that stocks it in Sydney - most of them have beadboard (what its known as in the U.S.).
I am not sure what I got.
I think its probably continuous. The fellow asked me
if I wanted the dense type??
Give them a call,
A&C Polystyrene -02 9756 6118 OR

The two sorts of polystyrene you are talking about are expanded and extruded.
The "beadboard", where the foam consists of smaller compacted cells of foam, is the expanded sort; it is less dense, has a "grain", is weaker and more difficult to work - this is the stuff mainly used in packaging.
The "dense type" is extruded polystyrene. This type of foam is frequently coloured blue and is often used as insulation in fabrication requiring good thermal properties, such as cool rooms.
Extruded foam is easily worked and available in large sheets. It can be glued into blocks and shapes up well. You can even turn a block of it on a lathe.
Any supplier/ manufacturer of insulated structures should be able to point you in the direction of a good source of this material.
