This hasn't really got anything to do with woodwork except when I load the car. I have a Toyota Camry station wagon. The boot refuses to stay up these days and when I'm unloading or loading the car, it clonks me on the head. It seems to stay up for a second and then slowly it descends. Is there a control I can adjust somewhere?
No, but you can get your gas struts refilled.

No you can't ajust them you can regas them but the cheapest way out is to go to the wreackers and buy two more about $10-$20

The two little black arms up the top that look like hydraulic cylinders need adjusting that'sa ll.
The ones on it now need adjusting so they are in the tip, and the ones at the spares shop need adjusting so they are on your car. :p

a really cheap fix is to cut a peice of wood the right length and prop it open:cool:
I used to use a hand clamp - like a large clothes peg to clamp onto the strut.

And if you have a good memory & a somewhat malicious sense of humour - you can get gas struts with a variety of 'strengths' - I have seen ones rated at 250 pounds each - say 200 Kg of thrust for the pair :eek: - wanna launch someone into next week with your boot lid?
OK, they also come in 25 pound ratings and a heap of intermediate steps too. Get them at an engineering/truck accesory warehouse.
I used to have an old Corona wagon, which i fitted some big speakers into to tail gate. I didnt want to cut the plastic door skin, so i replaced it with 12mm ply, into which i mounted the speakers. End result was too heavy for the struts, so I cut a piece of timber to hold the door up. The number of times I knocked the strut while unloading the boot, causing the lid to GUILLOTINE onto my head was almost as ridiculous as the speaker set-up. I sold the car to an old man, and sometimes wonder how he went with my modification......:o
