Door Jam Widths?? Besser Block Walls....

I have purchased my first home!! It is a small house and is Made from Besser Blocks 190 Thick. The walls were not plastered so we have had that done and that looks great, but now the Door Jams are not wide enought to cover then plaster. I am weighing up my options.

Should i install new door jams 20mm wide (10mm plaster either side), or should i use some left over timber from another door in which i don't need door jams now to cut 10mm strips and nail/glue to existing jams to extend them? I am a bit unsure and will be tackling the job soon...........

Any comments would be good! I will have to do this soon and install the architraves once the Tas Oak Floor Goes down! Another hassle...........

I'd just put strips on, a lot easier than rehanging doors.

Thats what i was leaning too. Any more comments would be good...........

Go with the strips, use plenty of glue as you don't want them splitting when nailing on your archs later.

only problem with just adding strips is that your dooe will be recessed 10mm in to the jamb,and you will not be able to open it right back.And the tongue on your lock striker will probably be too short too.

Ok, that makes sense. What can i do about the door tongues??? Tools you have any suggestions........

There is an alternative which at first seems a little left field but which will save a lot of stuffing around with infil strips, extended hinges and tounge problems etc
I'm guessing that your architraves are thicker than the 10mm plaster coat. So....

1. Align the architrave on the jamb linings as they were orignially installed.
2. Scribe the plaster with the line of the outside face of the architrave
3. With an angle grinder and a fence glamped on the line cut a groove along the opening side of the line. Take care not to overcut the corners
4. Remove the plaster to the line
5. Refit the architrave which will now be in it's original position and should have it's face about 5mm proud of the face of the plaster
6. If you have cut the groove neatly you should now be able to put a neat line of sealant in the gap between plaster and architrave. Neat as.
7. You should now be able to simply re hang the doors in their original hinge rabbits and not need to modify any hardware

The architraves also will not be so proud of the wall which will have the effect of making any small rooms seem larger.

It certainly is that :)

Aside from all the extra work in that, skirting won't line up with archs, it would end up 10mm proud.

If he has standard striker plates "the tongue on your lock striker" adding the 10mm strip won't be a problem.
