Filling low spots in lawn

After some excavation,we put some turf down.It has now settled a bit and I need to level it up. it is about 600mm wide and 100mm deep .

What is the easiest/best way to do this.Somebody mentioned Washed river Sand on top.

From your description the backfill has compacted over the excavation by 100mm?

If that's the case, you will need to take up the turf, and fill under it, or fill over it and lay new turf.

River sand is fine, but 100mm of anything on top of the grass is enough to kill it entirely.

Using a nice sharp straight bladed spade, cut the turf vertically in to one spade sized squares.
Under cut each square about 2" deep and lift off. Keep in shade.
Fill hollow to about 1.75" from surface.
Relay turf where it came from.
Stamp it down a bit and water well.
You wont know it happened in a day or so.

If you are going to bother to lift the turf you may as well put some good topsoil underneath before you lay it back down with a thin layer on top just to fill the gaps when you water it in.

Sage words. If you're going to topdress, only do it 1/2" at a time. Might take a few years to get back to the original level. Quicker and easier to take it up and start again.:D
