Tiling over a painted timber wall?

Hi folks,

I have small section (under 5 sq m) of wall in an enclosed patio that I would like to tile over to make a "feature" wall. The current wall is grooved plywood that has been painted with a satin paint. The paint and plywood substrate are in excellent condition.

Q: Can I tile directly over the painted wall?

I would prefer not to use a tile underlay as this would increase the overall thickness and bring the level of the tiles in front of the surrounding architraves/skirting.

I can sand or strip the paint back to bare timber if it helps adhesion.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated...

Stripping and sanding is recommended and will provide the best adhesion. Assuming by grooved you mean a type of v-joint or similar? As long as it's predominantly perfectly flat, you should be ok. Just research the right tile adhesive to use

Thanks - I've done some online research and will probably sand back to bare wood (chemical paint stripper is not recommended) and then use a suitable primer.
