what type? got a picture?
I would have liked to do this, but the masking up seems like a TON of work.
I think it would have to be one of those jobs you do over a year where you tackle a different window every fortnight.
first step is to lightly sand the frames with emery paper. just enough to take the sheen off. then, tape up any trim/reveal/glass. probably want to investigate the cost of having someone else do this for you at this stage. still committed? next, if you have plain silver, untinted aluminium frames, you will need primer. apply primer wherever you are going to paint. leave to dry. if you have the coloured sort, you can just paint the metal shield paint straight on.
It can be worthwhile talking to a technical rep from one of the paint manufacturers, there are specific undercoats to deal with painting over powdercoat finishes. We had this done professionally to a set windows 18 months ago, the glass was removed, old powdercoat given a light sanding and then everything taped up and sprayed. Not been a long test yet, but so far it is looking good.
Removing the glass and getting them sprayed would be the best way to go. The DIY route is painful.
Sounds very labour intensive, especially assuming sliding or awning opening faces need to be dealt with
