Restoring an old hardwood table with carved legs.

Hi all,

I'm keen for some collective wisdom and thoughts on an old hardwood table with hexagonal carved/turned legs.

Have an old hardwood dining table I'm keen to restore. About 25+ yrs ago, I "restored" it by hand sanding losing some of the sharpness, stainign ti with some colourwood stain and polyurethane. Its time for a proper renewal and think it is salvageable with enough effort.

The first step is getting the top flat - one join in the middle has opened up and cupped a little where it's had too much baby food engrained in it over the past 5 years. There is a loose cleat at this point into the wooden apron that might need replacing. this might help flatten the top, but I'm not sure this will work. I'm nervous about sanding it flat, and then ending up with a deficit.

Will I make things worse by removing all the aprons and seeing if the join is loose enough to take apart and reglue? Am I asking for more trouble?

Any other suggestions on the approach to making the top flat?
Thoughts on how to approach the legs? ? cabinet scraped?
Any other comments on the table and style?

Judging by the vehicle in the pic's you're probably not too concerned about the current petrol prices. :D Nice table.

Yes. It’s a lovely table with lots of detail.

It was in a house my grandparents lived in in the 50’s but don’t know much more about it other than that.
Be interested in learning more about the style of anyone I’d knowledgeable!
