Hello to everyone, I hope I get the hang of this part of posting.
I have loved timber for a long time, done woodturning, helped build our own home, and raised three sons who love timber also, I am 65 y.o. Female. Hope to be able to join in the group. Just need to get an idea how to upload pictures, where to post questions and help others if possible.

An electric sander would be too savage on red cedar, and the job is so fiddled.Quote:

Thank you for your interest, you probably think “get the sons to do it” but NO they have their families and work to take up their time and now I’m retired ? I have all the time in the world ? Apparently ! But do I have the energy?

Welcome Worn out....Umm.. Not sure I should use that abbreviation, but in any event think of a nickname as a term of endearment. :)
Your picture, I think is a window? I understand about the cedar (cedar or western red cedar, which is softer again) being soft. I think I would use a hand scraper to remove flaking paint and to get into the corners, but then I would use a ROS . Remember you can choose a finer grit to control your sanding and avoid removing anything except minimal amounts of timber: Really just back to fresh timber. The ROS (Random Orbital Sander) is a very gentle device and would ordinarily only be used for finish sanding.
