I saw this piece of outstanding ebonisation and wonder how it might be done. Timber is American Black Walnut.

Wouldn't mind doing this on a few boxes and for stringing.
Perhaps a combo of water then oil dyes? Ive never achieved anything like this using steel wool/vinegar....
I've seen Black Walnut that was almost that black to start with.
Are you sure it's ebonised?

What about several coats of Feast Watson black Prooftint. It will make wood just as black as that.

Steel wool, vinegar and an old tea bag - leave for a couple of days and then strain. Paint on wood and leave in sun to dry, repeat if not black enough.
Works a treat on most timbers. The old tea bag is to add tannins for timbers lacking in them but it help the others too
Is there a good tea? Traditional real Black Tea?

if you don't use pressure the dye is just a surface treatment.
My own experience with ebonisation is that it's just the same, doesn't really go beyond the surface. I also never got it beyond a very dark brown - looked black from a distance but nothing like what you see there. I wanted black for stringing too - better to just buy some dyed veneer from os. Or use Wenge, Lauro preta or makassar ebony veneer, which shouldn't be too hard to find.
Unless the penetration is deep you can't work the stringing.
