When do you need an expansion joint in brickwork?

Hi people,

Getting a garage designed, just single skin with engaged piers.
Does anybody know what the longest run of wall can be before requiring an expansion joint? If an expansion joint is needed, how are the bricks tied securely together?

Al should be able to answer that.

Longest run of brickwork is 6M, depends on the soil test.
Expansion ties hold the two bits together.

Now my opinion!
What a load of bollocks ( check spelling).
If you have enough ground bearing support, you dont need CJ's ( control joints ).
My house is over 30 years old, and not one CJ, there is not a crack to be seen anywhere.
If you put down a good foundation, you dont need CJ's, but Im only a brickie, so what would I know.

So do you think a run of 11.5 metres continous would be ok on good footing?
Do location of expansion joins need to be shown on plans?
I'd rather leave them out if avoidable.

Unfortuneatly I dont make the regs, so you had better ask the council concerned, or an archetect. :D
You will need to comply with the regs to get it all passed.
CJ's need to be shown on all plans.

6mt is the go or as per the brick co.s data sheet. You can normal put the joint under the down pipe,

Agree 100% with oz.. But you cant argue with council regulators and engineers. If you have a window or door on that side the expansion joint should be put there. That way only a small part of the brickwork has a gap in it.

I think its a matter for your engineer and geotech situation. Seen plenty of 6m+ walls with no expansion joints and Im talking recently built.

If the engineer dont want them, then I dont either.
