problems with a backhoe

Seeing that you guys and girls have a diverse knowledge base I thought I might ask a few questions.

I have a John Deere backhoe and this morning it started albiet the starter motor didn't kick over as quickly as usual. It then wouldn't start at all until I put in a new battery. It had two before and both were flat.

Now when I put the machine in gear (forward or reverse) the warning buzzer sounds. Out of gear no buzzer.

Anyone got any ideas what this could be.

BTW what is the best way to test an alternator to see if its OK? Will a multimeter do the job?

Try a dirty battery terminal, though sometimes a flat battery will do it.

A multimeter will tell you if its charging.
With the engine running on charged batteries you should have between 13.8 volts and 14.4 volts at the battery.

If the battery is a bit flat the voltage will be lower until the battery charges up.

Ok jokes over. Use a digital meter for a load test. Start voltage (4 or 5 times to test the battery). Then running voltage (13.6 for 12 volt and 28 for 24 volt). Then load up the alternator with every light etc fitted and check the voltage drop (should be bugger all). Vary the revs to see if the regulator is good. Clean all the terminals first even if they look clean.

How old is it?.. some of the older models have an external regulator which can be problematic.

The buzzer worries me though as it goes off when in gear and stops when out of gear.

The machine is great otherwise. As for backhoes you cant go past a Deere or Case, so they tell me.

what's the warning buzzer for? Low oil/water/volts? What sort of box is it? Manual (dark ages) or hydrostatic?

Are there any interlocks.
Seat belt. Transmission. pto?
In one it had a hand brake warning buzzer that went off if you put it into gear with the HBreak on.

You solved it Dave, thanks mate. Bloody kids pulled it up two clicks from bottom. I never use it as I'd rather rely on the buckets in dirt brake so I never thought to look at it.

Its always so simple in hindsight. Thanks guys.
