Any alternative to costly Livos Oil?

As recommended by many on this forum, and by Bungendore Wood Gallery, the best finish for boxes is Livos Kunos #244 oil, which has predominantly a linseed oil base.

i have been using it for a few years now, and it gives a nice finish, is easy to apply ( wipe on, wait about 10-20 minutes, wipe off) and with three coats gives a nice satin finish, which does not attract dust or fingerprints.

But the price is very high, $86 for 3/4 litre delivered in Townsville, NQ. And 3/4 litre does not go very far, even when thinned 100% as recommended by Bungendore.

Can anyone please suggest a suitable alternative, with all of the pros outlined above, and more reasonably priced eg $40 a litre?

With my 3/4 litre cans I pour the contents into 750ml wine bottles, and use one of those vacuum corks (VacuVin) to extract air and stop it from going off long term. For additional security, I replace the cork each time I open the bottle. And just to be sure, I use dark bottles and wrap them with duct tape to stop any exposure to light, and store it in a dark cool cupboard. Seems to work :)

If I buy the 2.5 litre tin container, there will have to be some serious drinking done before I can open the tin :)

Bit of a downer. They want $38.50 for handling and shipping. Apparently based in Bega NSW, way down on the south coast

That's only three bottles of plonk. You could do that in one night if you're determined. :D

I hadn't considered the idea of the tin going off. Better check now!

For paint and the various titebonds, I use used tomato and BBQ sauce squeezy bottles. They last forever and the end seals extremely well. For the paint, I squeeze them until the paint exists then twist closed.

They are excellent for glue ups.

I'm a bit worried about my Kunos stash now :(

I buy the 2.5 l tin and decant a small amount into a jar for regular use. It doesn't seem to go off in the tin. As for alternatives...nothing yet.

Checked my tin this evening. All good!

Stuff seems to last forever, though its very economical. A blanket chest and ~15 boxes in and it's still only 20% used.

I cannot comment on postage charges or what outlets sell a product for however one thing is for sure, postage has increased as has all forms of transport unfortunately.


Re the product though. Honestly, and in my opinion, it is very economical. This comes from our background of doing floor sanding and oiling concrete floors and decks.(..and we have used other products too but have stuck to Livos)
In these cases, we are talking 100s of sq mt and 10 lts tins, RRP 600$+.
When one though works out that it covers 165 sq mts, all 3 coats..and is obtaining a product that is absolutely non toxic, full ingredient disclosure, certified food safe, certified safe for toys, slip resistant tested and not forgetting the ease or repair and touch ups etc...


Because of the nature of the products, not having any synthetic preservatives, we recommend as is on the data sheets, that one decants any unused portions to smaller containers without oxygen. (or add some clean marbles to the tin to left the level up and reducing the oxygen in the tin..watch out for the glass bottles though LOL).
Depending on conditions, it may keep or it may not. The products do not like the high and lows of temperatures in e.g. a small tin shed in the back yard.


To make it more economical, buy with a few mates, or buy a larger tin and decant straight away once you have thoroughly mixed it. It isn't just linseed oil on its own.
